About the Orthodox cassock
The cassock is the daily uniform of an Orthodox clergyman. The inner podryasnik buttons down the front; the outer ryassa (worn by deacons, priests, and bishops outside the altar) is looser, with wide sleeves and an open front. We make both, in matching fabric so a priest can order the set together.
Materials
- Year-round gabardine — the most popular fabric, comfortable in most climates, holds a press.
- Wool blend — warmer, for northern parishes or winter wear.
- Light cotton blend — for summer climates (Florida, Texas, Greece).
Fit and measurements
For a cassock that fits well, we need five measurements: height, chest, waist, shoulder width, sleeve length. Send them through our measurement form — photos show exactly where to measure.
Bishop riassa
The bishop’s outer riassa is cut wider with an extra-long sleeve, and is traditionally ordered in a slightly different fabric (often a heavier weave). Mention the rank when you order.
Questions about this product
What is the difference between a podryasnik and a riassa?
The podryasnik (inner cassock) buttons up the front and is the daily under-cassock. The riassa (outer cassock) is wider, with open front and wide sleeves, worn over the podryasnik on more formal occasions and outside the altar.
Do you make cassocks for deacons too?
Yes. The cut is the same as for priests; the difference is in rank-specific details when ordered together with vestments. Tell us the rank when you order.
What fabric do you recommend for warm climates?
Light cotton blend or lightweight gabardine. Tell us where the wearer serves and we will suggest a fabric.
How long does a custom cassock take?
Most cassocks ship in 4-6 weeks. If you need it for a specific date (ordination, consecration), tell us when you order.
Do you offer riassa with a Russian or Greek cut?
Both. The Russian-cut riassa has a slightly fuller silhouette; the Greek-cut is more fitted. Just tell us which tradition.
