Book Covers

Orthodox book covers — for the Gospel, Apostol, Trebnik, and other service books — protect the holy text and proclaim it visibly when carried in procession. We hand-embroider every cover to the exact width, height, and spine of your book.

Browse the covers below, or order a custom size: just measure your book’s width, height, and spine and we’ll fit the cover precisely.

About Orthodox book covers

The cover of a service book is not just protection — it is part of the icon program of the altar. The Gospel especially is venerated as the image of Christ Himself, and its cover traditionally bears the Resurrection on the front and the Crucifixion or the four Evangelists on the back, all in silver or gold embroidery.

Measuring your book

For a perfect fit we need three measurements:

  • Width — the front face of the closed book.
  • Height — the top to bottom of the closed book.
  • Spine — the thickness of the closed book at the spine.

Measure with the book fully closed. If the cover will protect a book whose pages curve outward, add a small allowance (1/4 inch) to the spine measurement.

Embroidery options

  • Cross only — a single embroidered cross on the front, simple and quick.
  • Resurrection icon — the most common choice for Gospel covers, in silk and gold thread.
  • Crucifixion or Evangelists — typical for the back of a Gospel cover.
  • Inscription — any text in Greek, Slavonic, English, or other languages, embroidered in metal thread.

Frequently asked about book covers

How precisely will the cover fit?

Exactly. Give us the width, height, and spine of your book in inches (to the nearest quarter inch) and we cut and stitch the cover to those dimensions.

What books do you make covers for?

Gospels, Apostol, Trebnik, Sluzhebnik, Chasoslov — any service book. Tell us the title and we will recommend the embroidery convention.

Can I send you the book?

You can, but it is usually faster and safer to just send us measurements. If you do want to ship the book, contact us first to coordinate.

Do the covers protect the book from wear?

Yes. They are fully lined and structured, with reinforced corners. The book slips into the cover and the embroidered face stays clean even with regular liturgical use.

How long does a custom cover take?

Most custom Gospel covers take 4-8 weeks. Cover-only orders (no icon, just a cross) ship faster.
