Epitrachelion Sets

12 items

The epitrachelion — the priest's stole — is the one vestment without which no Orthodox priest may serve a single sacrament. We fully embroider every epitrachelion in our Florida atelier, and offer it both on its own and as a set with matching cuffs (epimanikia) in the same brocade and embroidery.

What the epitrachelion is

The epitrachelion (literally “around the neck”) is the stole worn by every Orthodox priest. It begins as a single band passed around the neck, with both ends descending in front, joined down their length so they hang as one broad strip to below the knees. It signifies the grace of the priesthood poured out on the one who wears it — and because it is the indispensable sign of priestly authority, a priest dons it even for services where he wears no other vestment, such as hearing confession or serving a molieben.

Epitrachelion and cuffs as a set

The epitrachelion is most often ordered together with the cuffs (epimanikia / poruchi) in matching fabric and embroidery, since these are the pieces a priest wears for the shorter services and sacraments outside the full Liturgy. A coordinated epitrachelion-and-cuffs set is also a frequent ordination gift. We make the two to match exactly — same brocade, same cross pattern, same trim.

Design and embroidery

The front of the epitrachelion traditionally carries a row of embroidered crosses down its length, sometimes with icons of the apostles or the Great Feasts, finished with a fringe at the hem. We work the embroidery in metallic gold or silver thread to suit the brocade, and can add an icon panel, a parish saint, or an inscription on request. The whole piece is lined and lightly stiffened so it hangs straight without curling.

Colours and matching

We make epitrachelion sets in all the liturgical colours and will match an existing phelonion or full set — send us a photo and we find the closest brocade. Most priests own several: a gold one for ordinary use and darker colours for Lent and memorials.

Frequently asked about epitrahelion sets

What is an epitrachelion?

The epitrachelion is the Orthodox priest's stole — a broad band worn around the neck with both ends joined and hanging in front to below the knees. It signifies the grace of the priesthood and is the one vestment a priest must wear to serve any sacrament, even when he wears nothing else.

What comes in an epitrachelion set?

A set pairs the epitrachelion with matching cuffs (epimanikia / poruchi) in the same brocade and embroidery — the pieces worn together for confessions, molebens, and the shorter services. Sets are also a popular ordination gift.

Can you match my existing phelonion?

Yes. Send us a photo of your phelonion or full set and we match the brocade colour and the cross or icon embroidery so the epitrachelion reads as part of the same vestments.

What colours do you offer?

All the traditional liturgical colours: gold for most Sundays, white for Pascha and Theophany, red for martyrs and Holy Week, blue for the Theotokos, green for Pentecost, purple for Great Lent, and black for memorials. Most priests own several.

How long does a custom epitrachelion set take?

A standard embroidered epitrachelion and cuffs set takes 3-6 weeks. Sets with an embroidered icon panel or goldwork take 6-8 weeks. Tell us your deadline — an ordination or feast — and we will confirm the timeline.
